Once upon a time, in a little village made of white snow, lived a girl named Sophie. Sophie had rosy red cheeks and a big smile. She also had a best friend. His name was Snowball.
Snowball was a fluffy white cat with bright green eyes. One cold morning, the sun was shining. It was time to play outside. Sophie put on her big blue coat.
Zip! Zip! Then she put on her fuzzy red hat.
Snap! Finally, she put on her favorite red mittens. They were soft and warm. Sophie wiggled her fingers.
Wiggle, wiggle. 'Are you ready, Snowball? 'Sophie asked. Snowball meowed.
Meow! He was ready too. They opened the door. Whoosh!
The cold wind blew. Sophie stepped into the snow. Crunch, crunch, crunch. The snow was very deep.
'Let's run! 'said Sophie. She ran fast. Zoom!
Snowball ran fast too. Zoom! They played chase around the big pine tree. Sophie threw a snowball up into the air.
Splash! It landed right on top of Snowball's nose. Snowball shook his head. Shake, shake.
Sophie laughed. Ha, ha, ha! It was so much fun. Then, Sophie saw a little bird on a fence.
'Hello bird! 'she called. She waved her hand. But something felt funny.
Sophie looked at her hand. Oh no! One red mitten was gone! Her hand was cold.
Brrr! Sophie stopped smiling. 'Where is my mitten? 'she asked.
She looked on the ground. No mitten. She looked in the snow. No mitten.
Sophie felt sad. 'I lost my mitten,'she said. Snowball came over. He rubbed his soft head against Sophie's leg.
'We will find it,'Sophie told Snowball. 'We must look everywhere. 'Can you guess where the mitten was? Sophie and Snowball walked back to the big pine tree.
Look, look, look. Was it there? No. They walked to the garden fence.
Look, look, look. Was it there? No. Sophie sighed.
A big, white cloud came out of her mouth. 'Where is the mitten? Where is the mitten? 'she said again.
Snowball sniffed the ground. Sniff, sniff, sniff. His ears went up. Twitch, twitch.
Snowball saw something! He ran toward the bushes. Zoom! Sophie ran after him.
'Wait for me! 'she cried. Snowball stopped by a pile of soft snow. He meowed loudly.
Meow! Sophie looked closely at the snow. She saw something red. It was her mitten!
But wait. A little field mouse was sitting on it. The mouse looked cold. His paws were freezing.
'Oh, you poor little thing,'said Sophie. Sophie did not grab the mitten. She was kind. She waited.
The mouse climbed into the mitten to get warm. It was a perfect mouse house. After a minute, the mouse was warm.
He wiggled his nose. Thank you, little mouse! Then he hopped away into the woods.
Sophie picked up her mitten. She brushed off the snow. Brush, brush. 'Thank you, Snowball!
'Sophie hugged her cat. Snowball purred. Purrrrrr. Sophie put the mitten back on her hand.
It felt warm again. 'I must be more careful,'Sophie said. 'I need to take care of my things. 'Sophie had a good idea.
She took a long string. She tied the mittens to her coat sleeves. Now they could not get lost! Sophie and Snowball went back to play.
They slid down the little hill. Weee! It was a wonderful day. Sophie was happy.
She had her mitten. She had her cat. And she learned a big lesson. Taking care of your things is important!
