Scene 1: Once's moment

Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Finn. He lived in a cozy cottage by the big, blue sea. Every night, he saw a tall, tall lighthouse blink-blink-blinking its light. One soft, windy night, Finn whispered,"I want to see inside!" He put on his red boots and tip-toe, tip-toe walked to the lighthouse. The door went CREE-EAK as he pushed it open. Inside, it was dark and dusty. Finn felt a tiny bit scared, but he took a deep breath and said,"I’m brave!" Suddenly, a soft voice said,"Hello, little friend." Finn looked and saw a glowing, see-through captain with a curly mustache. It was the ghost of Captain Morrow!"Boo!" said the captain, but his eyes twinkled. Finn giggled, not screamed."You’re not scary! You’re silly!" Captain Morrow floated down the twisty stairs."My shadow is stuck at the very top, and I’m too scared to get it. Will you help?" Finn’s tummy felt flutter-flutter, but he nodded."Yes! I can help!" They started to climb. Step, step, step.

The stairs went click-clack, click-clack. Shadow shapes danced on the walls - big ones, small ones, wiggly ones! Finn whispered,"I see a bunny shape!" He wiggled his fingers."I see a dragon!" Can you make a shadow bunny with your hands? Halfway up, the wind went WHOOSH-WHOOSH outside. The lantern rocked to and fro.

Captain Morrow’s ghostly hat flew off!"Oh no!" he cried. Finn caught the hat and put it back on the captain’s head."We’re a team!" Finn said. The captain smiled a big, glowy smile. They climbed more.

Step, step, step. Soon they reached the very top room. There, stuck in a corner, was a lonely little shadow shaped like a tiny ship. It looked sad and droopy.

Captain Morrow sniffled."That’s my ship, the Merry Wave. My shadow misses sailing." Finn kneeled down."Hi, Shadow Ship. Don’t be sad. Let’s go on an adventure!" The shadow wiggled but stayed stuck.

Finn thought and thought. He looked at the big lighthouse light. He clapped his hands."I know!

Let’s use the bright light to set you free!" Finn turned the light round and round. VROOM! A golden beam swept across the room.

The shadow ship lifted up like magic. It grew bigger and bigger until it filled the whole wall. Now it looked like a grand ship with billowy sails!"Wow!" cheered Finn. The captain clapped ghosty hands."Hooray!" The shadow ship danced on the wall.

It swooshed left, it swooshed right. Captain Morrow laughed so loud the rafters shook. Finn laughed too."We did it!

We did it!" They said it again and again, like a happy song. The lighthouse blinked in happy rhythm: blink-blink, blink-blink. Captain Morrow bowed low."Thank you, brave Finn. You taught me that even ghosts can be scared, but friends make us strong." Finn gave the ghost a gentle high-five. His hand felt cool like mist.

The captain handed Finn a tiny, shiny seashell."Whenever you feel scared, hold this and remember you are braver than you think." Finn walked back down the stairs. Step, step, step.

The shadows waved goodbye. The door went CREE-EAK again as he stepped outside. The sky was painted pink and orange. Mommy was waiting with open arms."Where were you?" she asked. Finn showed the glowing seashell."Helping a friend be brave!" That night, Finn put the seashell under his pillow. When the room felt dark, the shell glowed soft and warm. Finn smiled. He wasn’t scared at all.

He knew that inside every little person lives a big, brave heart. And maybe, just maybe, Captain Morrow was sailing his shadow ship across the ceiling, blinking a little thank-you light. Goodnight, brave Finn. Goodnight, Captain Morrow.

Goodnight, dancing shadows.
